The Gondola has plied Venice's waters for over a thousand years, evolving into the graceful vessel we know today. Each gondola is constructed from 280 individual pieces using eight different types of wood, requiring months of skilled craftsmanship. The distinctive black colour, mandated since the 16th century, adds to its timeless mystique.
The asymmetric design—the left side is longer than the right—compensates for the gondolier's single-oar rowing technique, allowing the craft to travel straight despite being propelled from one side. This ingenious engineering, combined with the gondolier's expertise, enables navigation through Venice's narrowest waterways with remarkable precision.
